The Orthopaedic Institute Charity (Charity No. 1044906) is thrilled to have three runners in the London Marathon later this year.
Helping us to raise £39,718.00 to support one of the many projects carried out by our research teams are Victoria Hall – Assistant Practitioner, Louis McDonald – Project Manager and Claire Birch – Clinical Specialist Practitioner. All three work at the RJAH hospital and we can’t thank them enough for their support.
This particular study will focus on Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, a debilitating condition that affects approximately 1 in 5 adults over the age of 45 causing pain, disability and a reduced quality of life.
Principal Investigator, Dr Karina Wright, Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedics says “while total knee replacement remains an effective treatment option for individuals with end-stage OA, there are opportunities to intervene earlier in the pathway of the disease with several treatment options for early OA that seek to restore function, reduce symptoms and delay the need for a joint replacement.
However the long-term outcomes of treatments for early OA are currently difficult to predict and therefore it remains a challenge to decide who to treat by which method?
Our Research Team seek to address some of these issues and to improve the treatments for early OA by increasing our understanding of disease progression in the joint and by identifying certain biological markers that might indicate which patients will benefit from a particular treatment.”
The overall aim of the research is to build on previous studies in an effort to refine and validate the findings, ultimately providing individual patients with the best possible outcome. The data will then be shared for patient benefit via presentations at national and international regenerative medicine and orthopaedic meetings.
Please support Victoria, Louis and Claire and help the Orthopaedic Institute Charity raise the £39,718 required to complete this study and restore the quality of life for many sufferers.
